1492  Christopher Columbus discovers America.

1607  The Jamestown Virginia colony is established.

1619  African slaves are brought to Virginia.

1620  Pilgrims settle at Plymouth, Massachusetts.

1673  Marquette and Joliet explore the Mississippi river.

1694  The Bank of England is established.

1754  The French and Indian War begins.

1775  The American Revolution begins.

1776  Congress adopts the Declaration of Independence.

1788  The United States Constitution is adopted.

1789  George Washington is elected president of the United States.

1803  The United States purchases the Louisiana territory from France.

1804  Lewis and Clark explore the American West.

1812  The War of 1812 begins.

1836  Texans battle the Mexican army at the Alamo.

1846  The United States declares war on Mexico.

1849  The California Gold Rush begins.

1861  The American Civil War begins.

1863  Abraham Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation to end slavery.

1865  Abraham Lincoln is assassinated.

1865  The Civil War ends.

1869  The Transcontinental railroad is completed.

1898  The United States declares war on Spain.

1899  Britain goes to war against the Boers in South Africa.

1901  President William McKinley is assassinated.  Theodore Roosevelt becomes president.

1903  The Wright brothers build the first airplane.

1904  Japan attacks the Russian navy, start of the Russo-Japanese War.

1908  The Triple Entente alliance of France, Russia, and Britain is formed to prepare for World War 1.

1912  The Titanic sinks in the Atlantic ocean.

1913  The Federal Reserve Bank is established in the United States.

1914  World War 1 begins when Archduke Ferdinand Franz is assassinated in Yugoslavia.

1915  The Lusitania is torpedoed near the coast of Ireland.

1917  Communism is established in Russia.

1918  World War 1 ends.

1919  The Nazi party is established in Germany.

1927  Charles Lindbergh flies across the Atlantic ocean.

1929  The New York stock market crashes.

1933  Adolph Hitler becomes chancellor of Germany.

1939  World War 2 begins when Germany invades Poland.

1941  Pearl Harbor Hawaii is attacked by Japan.

1945  Dresden, Germany is fire bombed by Britain and the United States.

1945  The United States drops an atomic bomb on Hiroshima Japan.

1945  World War 2 ends.

1948  The state of Israel is established.

1949  China becomes a communist nation.

1950  The Cold War between the United States and Russia begins.

1950  The Korean War begins.

1963  President John Kennedy is assassinated in Dallas, Texas.  Lyndon B. Johnson becomes president.

1964  The Vietnam War begins when Congress passes the Gulf of Tonkin resolution.

1968  Senator Robert Kennedy is assassinated in Los Angeles, California.

1969  The United States lands a man on the moon.

1970  Four students are killed by the National Guard at Kent State Univeristy in Ohio.

1974  President Richard Nixon is forced to resign.

1975  The Vietnam War ends.

1991  United States goes to war against Iraq.

1991  Communism ends in Russia.

1993  David Koresh and his followers perish in Waco, Texas.

1999  The United States bombs Serbia.

2001  The World Trade Center and the Pentagon are hit by airplanes.

2001  The United States declares a War on Terror.

2001  The United States goes to war against Afghanistan.

2003  The United States goes to war against Iraq.

2004  George W. Bush is re-elected as president of the United States.
